While researching organizations to support for my Giving Plan I was drawn to non-profits that are using tiny homes and other small dwellings to provide shelter for the homeless. Some also support veterans and low income individuals.
For several years I’ve been interested in the tiny home industry. In 2015, I attended the 2nd annual Tiny Home Conference in Portland, Oregon. I committed in 2019 to furthering my education and contacts. I attended the Great American Tiny House Show (Denver and Portland) and the Tiny Living and Small Build Conference that was part of the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.
I’m a big believer in tiny homes as a solution for affordable housing. They can be built quickly, at a low cost, and using high-quality materials. Forward-thinking cities have taken interest and public financing has started to become available but it’s not enough. These non-profits need to raise millions of dollars to build these communities at the scale to support dozens to hundreds of residents. Every dollar helps.
